[NFAQ 1.0b] It's back [message #29637] Sa, 07 Mai 2005 19:06

Note: I've posted this once before, and it strikes me that with all the
newbies floating around it could do with a post about now, so here it is.

"This must be Tuesday. I never could... err... Sorry, all. Can we get
another take?"

~+~+~+~+~ Newbie FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) ~+~+~+~+~

Version 1.0b / Last changes 26/09/2004 / This posted 26/09/2004

Welcome to alt.fan.douglas-adams!

What follows is a hopefully-not-too-horrendously-out-of-date version of
the Newbie FAQ. In new, lovely question-answer form, where applicable.
That is to say, some/most of these aren't questions, but they are
helpful advice and it does mention other FAQs. Enjoy, and don't operate
heavy machinery, etc., within 2 hours of reading.

22. What's all this then?

1. What is this document (the NFAQ) about?

Ah, yes. This is the Newbie Frequently Asked Questions list (now with
answers as well). It's subject matter is general questions about the
newsgroup alt.fan.douglas-adams, aka afda, the people that frequent
the newsgroup, and the various other bits of Douglas Adams related
information.

2. What's the MFAQ all about, then?

Oh, the MFAQ! The MFAQ is posted in the newsfroup every - err, some -
well, the occasional (if it happens to be early 2002) Thursday. We all
hope that this will get better, as it involves more information about
Douglas Adams and his works, if that is what you are more interested in.
It stands for Most Frequently Asked Questions, and it also includes
answers. A slightly out-of-date version of the MFAQ can be found at
[ http://www.zootle.net/afda/mfaq.shtml ]. If your FAQ isn't answered
there, you could try checking out question number 3.

3. So what about the FAQ?

Yes, we expected you would get around to the FAQ eventually. It contains
the answers to all sorts of serious questions about Douglas Adams, and
all of his various works. It is accumulated from the knowledge of quite
a few people, and has some /very/ useful information in it, as well as
more trivia than you probably ever really want to know. It can be found,
after a brief apology, at the web address
[ http://www.zootle.net/afda/faq.shtml ]

4. What's with all the InsaniTea?

Well, to be honest, this group of people is more than slightly crazy.
Please do not be alarmed by anything you see or hear in this newsfroup.
You are bound to feel some initial ill effects, as it contains messages
at an improbability level of two to the power of two hundred and
seventy-six thousand to one against - possibly much higher.

5. What're all these odd replies then?

Didn't we say we're a crazy bunch? Some people, although we're not naming
names, have occasionally taken it upon themselves to answer what are
apparently honest questions with awfully[10] silly[11] answers[12].
Please bear that in mind when an answer to a question seems quite
improbable.

6. What's this about work then?

No cheating. That really sums it up. Most of us have had quite enough of
our various schoolings, and as surprising as it may seem, we don't relish
the chance to do some of your homework for you as well. Consequently, we
don't claim responsibility for your school grades if you ask us to help
you with homework that could be easily done by reading DNA's books, and
a little bit of thinking. Please see question 5 if you are in doubt as to
what sort of replies you'll get to pleas of help on homework.

7. Why don't we top-post then?

Most newsfroups (and even newsgroups) develop conventions to aid the
regular readers in keeping track of what is going on. One of those
conventions in this froup is to reply to a post at the /end/ of a message.
This helps the reader keep context and find out exactly who started
flaming who, or something similar.

8. What's a snip then?

As well as replying to the /end/ of messages (you do, don't you?), it is
considered polite to remove the portions of the message that are unnecessary
to establish context for your reply. While the proliferation of higher
bandwidth speeds in many parts of the world have made this slightly less
necessary, it is still the polite thing to do. Additionally, many people
appreciate it if you note where you removed text, usually with a variation
on the word "snip".

9. What's this about crossposting then?

Small doses of crossposting may be hazardous to your health. Beware
of Daisy. She has a short fuse...

10. What are all the numbers at the end of a post then?

Footnotes look like this: [X], where X is some combination of
numbers, letters, and symbols. They are found at the bottom of the post,
usually before the .sig starts, but not always. This, and other things,
has led to some missing footnotes upon occasion. But Don't Panic![pi]
The "missing" footnotes may be one of the standard footnotes, and not
need to be included. See the web page at
[ http://www.nut.house.cx/nemwiki?ISFN ] for more information.

11. What can I call myself then?

Ah, names. You can call yourself whatever you want. Even "" if you'd
like. Really. Almost. You /CANNOT/ call yourself by the name of a
country best known for chocolates and waffles, which happens to be in
Europe, and happens to start with "B" and end in "M." Otherwise, you can
call yourself whatever you damn well like.

12. Where else can I go that's afdaniain then?

There are some other ways of experiencing afdiain hoopiness. We also hang
around on IRC a lot, often without ever really saying much. Find us at
irc.slashnet.org on #afda. Newbies should be warned that this channel also
has a large number of Aglamians[pi^2]. If you survive the hazing, they'll
accept you almost like brothers, or something.

We also have a web site page. It is occasionally maintained (last
update 2003-03-05) by iain and has almost nothing to do with DNA (much
like this nf.) You can find it at
[ http://welcome.to/afda ] or [ http://www.zootle.net/afda ].

13. Who's Jacob then?

You are all figments of Jacob's imagination. If you have not already done
so, sign a declaration in blood stating that you are thought up entirely by
Jacob. There is no way out of this, and must be done, or else you will be
ignored in all eternity. Really. Tea? We've got many varieties.

14. What about blue maroon ginger spice cinnamon tea?

I'm sorry, but we're all out of blue maroon ginger spice cinnamon tea.

15. What's all this about froups then?

This is not a newsgroup, but a newsfroup and should therefore be
shortened to 'nf', not 'ng'. It is often referred to as a "froup", or even
(upon occasion) "the froup".

16. What's this about The Froup That Shall Not Be Named then?

I'm sorry, but I can't tell you. After all, what's the point of having a
froup that shall not be named, if you just go around and name it whenever
you darn well like. Nope, I'm sorry, but if you want to find a froup
dedicated to fans of us, you'll just have to look for it yourself.

16. What about those MP3s then?

Oh, the 24th commandment: Thou shalst not pirate any of DNA's works in any
form, and you will be disliked if we find out. In other words, no tea for you.

Yes, the radio play can be downloaded on MP3 and no, we don't want to tell
you where. We just covered this, didn't we?

17. What about that computer game then?

Yes, it's true. The HHGG Infocom game can now be played online. Look at
[ http://www.douglasadams.com/creations/infocomjava.html ] or
[ http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/game.shtml ]

18. What're all these campaigns then?

Ah, spring, when the smell of new campaigns is in the air! There are, at
various times, always campaigns of some sort or another in effect, or not.
(Did that not entirely make sense? Good! TCTSC!) These are generally
acronyms or conglomerations of letters that start with either 1) TC (meaning
"the campaign") or B) "Cam" (short for "campaign". See the Acronym
FAQ[42(b)] for a list of use[ful/less] acronyms.

19. What're those [B]s for then?

Due to years of practice, we have evolved a finely-tuned method for
denoting off-topic posts in the froup. It can be summed up by the
following:
Blue (marked with [B] in the subject line) are for relevant posts
Brown ([B]) is for irrelevant posts
Black ([B]) is for /really/ irrelevant posts.
For other colors (in case these aren't sufficient), please see
[ http://www.zootle.net/afda/tags.shtml ]

20. What's all this then?

Ano koudai tokage wa Toukyou o marobasu yo! Aieeeee!

21. What're these then?

Oh, yes! The coupons! I'd almost forgotten:

---------------------------------- ----------------------------------

| of Froup or Diet Froup. Valid in | | cake-jumping-out-ofs by our very |

22. What's all this then?

Mustn't forget the footnotes, now. That would be silly!

[10] http://www.zootle.net/afda/froup2.shtml
[11] http://www.zootle.net/afda/tftsnbn.shtml
[12] http://www.zootle.net/afda/lspn.shtml
[42(b)] [0.1] http://www.zootle.net/afda/acrofaq.shtml
[X] Also, watch out for self-referential footnotes[X], or looping
footnotes of various degrees of sophistication[Y].
[Y] Like this: [X].
[0.1] Footnotes don't _have_ to be in order, either, but they absolutely
_must_ be artfully arranged.
[pi] Sorry, I just wanted to say that.

In the two thousand and fifth year of Bob, iain's voice said the following,
in wonderful perfect quadrophonic sound with distortion levels so low as to
make a man weep:

OK, but I volunteered, so be nice to me. Or I won't post it again.
